Well, I've been asleep at the wheel again and, no, I didn't take an Ambien. It's simply my take on the way our reality is shifting at such a tremendous pace that it's often hard to keep track of it all. The Internet was the first major technology that really brought power to the individual. It's influence is still being felt. So far, I have seen this quite innocent invention revolutionize:

  • Big Business

  • Education

  • Relationships

  • Generational Culture

I'm sure the list goes on and on. But, I didn't get the connection between the Internet and the power of the press until today. Today, I stumbled on a debate on Bloggers Vs. Journalists. In this article, I'm informed the debate is over and I never even knew it had begun! It seems the media has been quite upset by the encroachment of individual bloggers into their sacred domain. What right does the individual have to disseminate news or opinions that have not been sanctioned by the media big players? Well, it seems they have every right because they're out there doing it! What's more sometimes they are better at it. Sometimes the blogs are even about issues that are either too "hot" to handle by established media outlets and sometimes they are about issues that would never be publicized simply because they don't generate enough readership to be profitable. This does not mean they aren't newsworthy, as we are slowly finding out. As we are slowly discovering through this process, the mass media does not create the culture - individuals do. In order to give free voice to that expression, the Internet is a perfect vehicle.

I'm finding the blogs are much more accurate in terms of what we are experiencing in this present timeframe. I'm realizing that we all don't just sit around and think about sex, gays, and the stock market. There is a large group of highly individual and intelligent people out there with a lot more to say about life than just what's considered mainstream. They create this culture too. All I can say is: it's about time we got to hear from the people sitting in the back of the classroom! Please do continue this debate about blogs versus journalism. The more it's discussed the more the mainstream media loses its hold on what media is appropriate or profitable enough to print and what is not.
